Watch for musty smells, soft cardboard, dark spots, stains, peeling labels, or unusual changes in texture. These signs do not always prove mold, but they show that the stock needs a closer inspection.

Record the date, location, product batch, and condition. Photos can help track changes and support decisions about cleaning, testing, or disposal.

  1. Act quickly when mold appears

Separate affected stock from clean goods. Do not shake, brush, or open moldy packaging in a crowded storage area. These actions may spread particles.

Wear suitable protective equipment and follow workplace safety guidance. Clean hard, non-porous surfaces with a method suitable for the material. Porous items such as cardboard, fabric, foam, and some wooden parts may not be safe to reuse after visible mold growth.

Ask the product supplier or a qualified safety professional before deciding whether affected goods can be cleaned, tested, or sold. When product safety or quality cannot be confirmed, hold the stock and keep it away from customers.

  1. Build a simple storage routine

A practical routine may include:

  • Daily checks for leaks and standing water
  • Weekly humidity readings
  • Regular inspection of pallets and cartons
  • Stock rotation based on product requirements
  • Cleaning of vents, drains, and storage surfaces
  • Written records for moisture incidents
  • Staff training on what mold and damp packaging look like

I prefer short checklists that staff can complete during normal warehouse work. A routine is easier to maintain when each task has a clear location, time, and person responsible.

Mold prevention is not only about cleaning visible growth. It starts with keeping goods dry, raised, spaced, and easy to inspect. When I combine moisture checks with good airflow and prompt action, I can reduce damage and spot storage problems before they affect a larger part of the stock.
